What stormwater drains do and why they need attention

Stormwater drains are designed to move rainwater away from your property quickly and efficiently. When they are blocked or damaged, water has nowhere to go and backs up around the foundation, into the garage, or through low points in the property. In heavy rain, a blocked stormwater drain can cause significant flooding in a very short time.

• Leaf litter and debris: the most common cause of blocked stormwater drains is a buildup of leaves, dirt and garden debris over the drain grate. Check your grates regularly, especially after storms or in autumn when leaf fall is heaviest.
• Tree root intrusion: roots from nearby trees and shrubs are naturally drawn to water sources. Over time they can crack and infiltrate stormwater pipes, causing partial or complete blockages that are not visible from the surface.
• Sediment buildup: soil and sand washed in during rain gradually accumulates inside the pipe. This narrows the flow capacity and increases the risk of backing up during heavy rainfall.
• Damaged or sunken grates: a cracked or sunken grate allows large debris to enter the drain directly. Check that all grates on your property are sitting flush and intact.
