Toilet parts that commonly cause problems

Toilets are one of the most used fixtures in any home, and most issues come down to a small number of internal parts that wear out over time. Knowing what to look for means you can catch problems early before they turn into water waste or damage.

• Cistern inlet valve: this controls the water flowing into the cistern after a flush. A faulty inlet valve is one of the most common causes of a toilet that keeps running. You will usually hear a constant trickling or hissing sound when this is the issue.
• Flush valve and flapper: the flapper seals the bottom of the cistern and releases water when you flush. When it wears out, water slowly leaks from the cistern into the bowl, wasting water continuously without you noticing.
• Toilet pan and base seal: check around the base of the toilet for any signs of moisture, staining or soft flooring. A failing wax seal or pan collar can allow wastewater to escape at floor level, which causes damage to the subfloor over time.
• Buttons and flush mechanisms: dual flush buttons can crack or stick, causing the toilet to run continuously or not flush properly. These are inexpensive to replace and straightforward for a licensed plumber to fix.
